Central Virginia Writing Project - Overview

Overview

The Central Virginia Writing Project (CVWP) is one of five projects in Virginia designed to help area teachers develop as writers and teachers of writing. Based on similar principles, these seven projects are linked with the Virginia Writing Project and the National Writing Project.

The Virginia Writing Project is a statewide effort to improve the writing of all Virginia's students, kindergarten through university. Each of the five Virginia Writing Project sites trains teachers each summer as Teacher Consultants to become change agents in their schools and school districts. During the summer institutes, fellows examine problems in the teaching of writing, present and demonstrate approaches to the teaching of writing, study current and past research in the field, write in various modes and from different points of view, and develop an in-service on the teaching of writing.

Professional Development

During the school year, CVWP provides opportunities for professional development through workshops and credit courses. To meet the reading/writing needs of Virginia's schools, colleges, and universities, CVWP plans programs with instructional personnel of all grade levels and from all subject areas. Please click here for some of the in-services, workshops, and courses the Project has offered. This list is only an illustration; the Project is not limited to these offerings. In fact, CVWP prefers to work with a system's instructional personnel to tailor appropriate programs.

The Center for the Liberal Arts, University of Virginia

The Central Virginia Writing Project and the University of Virginia's Center for the Liberal Arts work closely together to offer assistance to Virginia's schools and to provide opportunities for Virginia's teachers. The Project and the Center seek to combine their efforts and to tailor courses and workshops to meet the requests of schools and school systems.
