Special Education at UVa's Curry School of Education includes the following areas of specialization: Learning Disabilities; Emotional and Behavioral Disorders; Mental Retardation; and Severe Disabilities. In addition, there is a program of study in Early Childhood Special Education that combines components from early childhood special education and elementary education (K-3). The special education program area offers degrees that are part of the teacher education program as well as degrees associated with advanced study. This page guides you to other pages describing those degrees in detail.

Master of Teaching
...earned by students in the Five-Year or Post-Graduate teaching licensure programs

Master of Education
We are accepting new students in all the Masters of Education (MEd) degree areas in special education for the fall and spring of next year (2007-8).

Education Specialist
...a post-masters program designed for the accomplished, experiencedpractitioner with specific professional aspirations

Doctoral Degrees
...including a Ph.D. (for those who wish to conduct research and interpret and communicate the results of such research through writing, teaching, and other media) or an Ed.D. (for those interested in acquiring a broad and systematic understanding of professional education, a definitive knowledge of selected aspects of educational theory and practice, the ability to conduct research and program evaluation, and the know-how to apply research findings in an informed and critical manner).
